Chay-ya Clancy A Perfect Stillness Where Everything Moves

Opening: Tuesday 25 September, 6-8pm Dates: 25 September-13 October 2007

What is encapsulated in a line? ‘A Perfect Stillness Where Everything Moves’ is an exhibition featuring new works on paper by Melbourne artist Chay-Ya Clancy. The exhibition explores the graphic form of silhouette and its relationship to the concrete and ephemeral spaces we inhabit. This new body of work is site specific, created in direct response to the boundaries of the gallery space itself.

The artist explains: “My work takes the form of lines on paper, tracing the silhouettes cast by people, plants and objects. Overlapping the images in succession and creating drawings similar to the frames of a stop motion animation. I am intrigued by the elusiveness of silhouettes as transient objects, and how tracing it can capture the essence of a moment.”

Chay-Ya Clancy is a recipient of the City of Melbourne’s 2007 Young Artist’s Grant. Her work directly engages with the processes of mark making, movement through space and language in all its forms.
