Madeleine Rose Chapman and Scarlett Rowe Dancing about Architecture

Opening: Wednesday 3 July, 6-8pm Dates: 3-20 July 2013

Looking through the camouflage of the city, we find that the way the individual moves around buildings and others is more like an elaborate dance, “Their swarming mass is an innumerable collection of singularities.”. These movements, frozen, allow the individual to become something more than just another rat in the race; they become a monument; a temporary fixture to the urban interplay.

Madeleine Rose Chapman is interested in the meeting of the antithesis; the point in which one thing is teetering, nervously oscillating between its positive and negative.

Tradition and Technology; Loss and Gain; Mortality and Immortality; Reality and Simulation.

What is required? What is desired?

I wonder are these people leaving or are they arriving?

Scarlett Rowe’s practice involves an observation of inconsistencies and oddities with in society. Utilizing a variety of media including, video, sound, text and sculptural installation Rowe investigates the manner in which man-made urban environments are pre-determined and controlled to deter the progression of unplanned redevelopment. She is particularly interested in how situation and habitation can merge into something of a theatre set, perpetuating the idea of paradise: a place of temporary perfection.
