Teelah George Face Vase and Rag Painting

Opening: Opening Wednesday 1 July, 6-8pm Dates: 1 – 18 July 2015

‘Face Vase and Rag Painting’ uses expanded notions of self-portraiture as a point of departure, examining the process of painting and aligning it with the semi-permanent infrastructure of the studio and Gallery. Steel supports and painting rags become part of the work and act as conceptual and practical framing mechanisms, exposing the daily routine of the studio and its propensity to emerge from various states of boredom, obsession and accident.

Often initiated through formal exercises, the paintings very quickly distract with the addition of layers and the act of ‘looking and looking away’. This process of deliberation, both with and without attention, leads to less contrived decision-making and a more cyclical and peripheral gaze. Both performative and practical, this process invites movement around the studio and allows for improvisation. In this way, the work finds its own narrative, responding to the material relationships forming unintentionally all around it.

Teelah George is a visual artist from Perth who employs archives and collections as a point of departure and questioning within her practice. Selected recent exhibitions include; Win win (Hugo Michelle Gallery, Adelaide), Use to stop doors from rattling in frames (Venn Gallery, Perth), Will to Keep (107 Projects, Sydney) all 2014. Teelah has been selected as a finalist in the Biennial Guirguis New Art Prize (GNAP) 2015 and is the recipient of the 2015 Artsource Gunnery residency at Artspace. She has work in the Art Gallery of Western Australia, City of Joondalup Collection and the Cruthers Collection of Women’s Art.
