Avni Dauti Mirrored Hardware

Opening: Wednesday 27 April, 6-8pm Dates: 27 April – 14 May 2016

Mirrored Hardware is both a mechanism of replicating data storage onto separate hard disks to ensure the ongoing accessibility of information, and a metaphor for the way technologies are appropriated, interpreted, and translated over time, in a number of different iterations.

This exhibition explores PLATO, the Programmed Logic for Automatic Teaching Operations computer system and its history. From its introduction and use during the Cold War to its demise in the wake of the Personal Computer revolution, this project examines its recent reemergence through aspects of contemporary technology such as touchscreen, online communities, multiplayer games, the proliferation of emoticons and social media—all originally developed and activated on PLATO.

Mirrored Hardware interplays the history of PLATO through a series of works around the gallery space and online, considering synergy and forms of new hybridisation as ways to explore the reciprocal relationship between PLATO and new media.
