Llawella Lewis To Dream of Home

Opening: Wednesday 29 April, 6-8pm Dates: 29 April – 16 May 2015

‘To Dream of Home’ takes its inspiration from the artist’s nostalgia for the Art Deco ceiling rose that adorned her childhood bedroom. Like many of us have done and continue still, Lewis reminisces (in her work) the many hours spent contemplating the design of this ceiling rose before drifting off to sleep. With this ceiling rose now removed and destroyed during recent house renovations, ‘To Dream of Home’ strives to reconstruct this dreamy, nostalgic vision from her childhood. In her trademark style Lewis has lovingly and meticulously constructed her homage to this ceiling rose out of drafting film and polyester thread using repetitive processes of cutting, folding and sewing.

Llawella Lewis is a Melbourne based artist who works primarily in sculpture and installation. Over the last few years she has focused on how architectural forms and structures synonymous with the Australian urban and suburban environment can be appropriated and renegotiated through material and spatial modes of production.

In July 2013 Lewis exhibited her soft sculpture ‘Quiltwood’ at Blindside Gallery Melbourne. This work was later selected for a group exhibition ‘Welcome! Welcome!’ curated by Linsey Gosper at Strange Neighbour Gallery Fitzroy in September 2013.

In 2012 Lewis was awarded a Small Project Grant from the Yarra City Council for her exhibition ‘Decay is in the Wind’ at C3 contemporary art space. The work from this exhibition was later selected for the group exhibition ‘Developments’ at Seventh Gallery Fitzroy, curated by Roger Nelson. In September 2012 Lewis was also invited to participate in the Conduit Arts artist residency program in Fitzroy. In 2010 Lewis exhibited ‘Curtain Place’ at Firstdraft, Sydney and at Inflight, Tasmania.
