Gian Manik White Facing

Opening: Opening Wednesday 29 April, 6-8pm Dates: 29 April – 16 May 2015

Fundamentally, painting explores the language of representation. The term vibration, when used in the context of my work, represents an in between or liminal space that is created when a painting borrows from a number of visual devices, as opposed to simply recording in a singular style. Representation is the nature of how one expects a predetermined reality. The specific aim of my practice is to investigate how painting the concept of vibration operates in representation.

Manik completed a Bachelor of Arts, Visual Art (Honours) at Curtin University of Technology, Perth in 2007 and a Master of Fine Arts at Monash University, Melbourne in 2012. Solo exhibitions include ‘First Outside Inside Last’, CAVES, Melbourne, 2015; ‘Foils’, Utopian Slumps Project Space, 2014; ‘Big Recorder’, Alaska Projects, Sydney, 2013; ‘The Retreat to Representation’, Venn Gallery, Perth, 2012; ‘Decorative Backings’, Artbeat, Melbourne, 2011; ‘Heinous Armani’, with Thomas Jeppe, TCB Art Inc, Melbourne, 2011; and ‘The Second Blow’, Black and Blue Gallery, Sydney, 2009. Selected group exhibitions include ‘4th Artist Biennial’, curated by Christopher L G Hill, Margaret Lawrence Gallery, Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne, 2013; ‘Fresh Paint’, Sutton Project Space, Melbourne, 2013; Manik was resident at Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts in 2008 and Artspace Sydney in 2009. His work is held in the Art Gallery of Western Australia and Artbank collections as well as various private collections in Australia and internationally.
