Utako Shindo, Distancing for opening (2018)
- Edition of 10 + AP
Archival inkjet print on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Baryta
Utako Shindo explores the poetics of (un)translatability, and semantic and material translation/transformation in art. Her art employs the various ‘transfer’ (known as ‘utsuru' in Japanese, meaning reflect, project, trace, emerge and transfer) processes, manifested as drawing, print, relief, photography and video, which often together comprise an installation work. She completed her Ph.D. at the Centre for Ideas, VCA&MCM, the University of Melbourne in 2017, and is currently an adjunct lecturer at Joshibi University of Art and Design in Tokyo. Recent exhibitions include, Reminiscent of long gone by, Sutton Gallery, Melbourne, 2018; unJapan, Kanzan Gallery, Tokyo, 2017.
