Paul Adair's work challenges our understanding of truth and artifice. In an ongoing exploration of the relationship between sculpture and the photographic image he re-creates and re-presents objects, alluding to perfection in order to reveal its artifice. Drawing attention to the hyper-real nature of contemporary life, Adair doesn’t present fictions to contrast the facts of our existence, but rather reveals illusion to be at the heart of our constructed, everyday realities.
Adair has enjoyed success from early on in his career. He was included in significant exhibitions that recognised notable emerging artists, such as Hatched, Perth Institute for Contemporary Art (2006) and Fresh Cut, Institute of Modern Art, QLD (2003). He has had several institutional solo shows, including Decoy, exhibited at Queensland Centre for Photography and Logan City Art Gallery (both 2006) and A Perfect Crime, Starter Space, Watermall Café (2003). In 2009, Three-Hole Mountain Inn featured in the group show Temperature 2, at the Museum of Brisbane. Most recently Adair exhibited a solo show entitled Circle Jerks at Bus Projects, Collingwood VIC (2013). Marking his expansion into the international art scene, Adair has also exhibited at Photo LA in association with Queensland Centre for Photography (2007 and 2009) and was awarded an Australia Council Studio Residency in Los Angeles (2007). He was a finalist in The Churchie National Emerging Art Prize (2013), won the Artworkers Alliance Award, RAWspace (2006) and the Hobday and Hington Bursary, Queensland Art Gallery (2005).
