David Attwood, Merch is Church (2016)
- Edition of 5 + AP, Archival inkjet print on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Baryta
Merch is Church features an image found on Instagram of a teen holding a Nike Air Max trainer up to their ear, as if to speak to it, and it to them. The artist considers the image connotative of the way that we increasingly speak through commodities, and image ourselves through their display and adornment: An image of an image of an image.
David Attwood is an artist based in Melbourne. Attwood holds a practice led doctorate in Visual Art from Curtin University, and has exhibited his work in artist run initiatives and contemporary art institutions around Australia. Recent projects include Officeworks, a group exhibition held inside of an Officeworks department store, and Do It For Free, a public artwork in the form of a shoe-exchange that saw 100 pairs of Nike Air Max trainers given to 100 members of the public. Attwood’s practice is broadly concerned with the critical potential of the readymade in the twenty-first century.
